A Man's Promise by Brenda Jackson

A Man's Promise is book no. 2 in the Grangers series by author Brenda Jackson. Before reading this book I hadn't yet read book #1. Let me tell you, I went and one-clicked it before
I even finished reading this one. Needless to say A Man's Promise had me riveted. Because these stories are so deeply connected, you may consider this review a bit of spoiler (particularly this coming up section of the review) if you haven't read book #1. A Man's Promise filled me in on a lot that happened in that first book, but it didn't take away from my enjoyment in the least.

A Little Background: The series tells the story of three sons. When they were children, their lives were greatly impacted by the murder of their mother and the conviction of their father for her death. Their father has maintained his innocence and they have always believed him. The boys are now adult men and have moved on to pursue interests outside of the family business. When their grandfather is on his deathbed he made them promise to stay and run the family business. This background story is pivotal to the plot and is the underlying mystery of A Man's Promise (and most likely the first book, A Brother's Honor (The Grangers), as well). This mystery doesn't get resolved in this book, but important information and developments do occur that continue to build on the who-dunnit plot.

The main plot in A Man's Promise involves Caden Granger. Caden is a world famous musician who's settled back home to fulfill his duty to his family. He is the middle Granger son and he's has always been close to a woman he grew up with named Shiloh Timmons. Their parents were friends until the death of Caden's mother, however, after her murder Shiloh's parents forbade her to have any contact with Caden or his family. True friendship and love can't be held back and over time the two became secret lovers. An incident occurs that prevents Shiloh from meeting Caden for a secret wedding. As a result of this incident and the lies that were told, Caden has come to hate Shiloh and is cruel to her whenever she tries to speak with him. Heartbroken Shiloh has decided to move on, however, Caden discovers the truth and promises to win Shiloh back.

I really enjoyed this book, but not so much for the romance as for all of the other things that were happening. That's not to say the romance was a bad one. I did like Shiloh and Caden and the history that they shared. Although I think she forgave him a little easily, it does make sense considering she never really stopped loving him in the first place. The beauty of this book, however, was the ensemble cast. All of the brothers were fascinating and were vastly different in personalities. I especially adored Dalton, the youngest brother and can't wait for his story. He's such a spoiled player and brat and I love that he's met a woman that just might be too much for him to handle. In addition to the brothers there is also the story of their father who is in prison, trying to protect his sons from a mysterious threat that surrounds the murder of his wife. Someone is willing to kill his sons if they won't leave well enough alone. The father's life in prison is particularly interesting for the impact that it has had on many people, namely inmates. Thanks to his efforts some have turned their lives around and look to him as a father figure. I imagine some of these men will have their own stories in the future.

A Man's Promise is a great story that will keep you turning the pages until the end. Although it is a series, the main story has a satisfying ending. Although the background story that ties the series together is not resolved by the end of the book, you won't feel as if you've been left with a cliffhanger. That said you'll still be anxious for next in the series. I do suggest getting the first book in the story "A Brother's Honor" as the books are closely intertwined. Like I said I have not yet read the first book, but I did buy it right away and I'm anxious to see what I missed. I'm happily giving this story a 5 out 5 rating.
